THEY DID IT! ISC FINISHES 8TH OUT OF 67 TEAMS WITH A HISTORIC PERFORMANCE!
April 4th-6th, 2014
They started the year with a huge statement at Mizzou.
They ended the year with an exclamation point in Atlanta.
Illini Swim Club all season has made it well known that this is their fastest roster yet. And just like every meet result this season, they capped off a record breaking year with another incredible performance at the East Coast Collegiate National Championships in Atlanta, Georgia this past weekend. After a disappointing finish last year, ISC came roaring back with eight medals this time around – five golds, one silver, and two bronze. Additionally, five new ECC meet records and thirteen new club records were set. When it was all said and done, ISC finished in 8th place at a meet that contained 67 teams and 1400 athletes. This topped their 9th place finish from 2012, at a Nationals that was far more competitive than the one two years ago. The ladies took 4th in the women's division (our best finish yet), while the men took 22nd.
Melissa Andruzzi swam a performance for the ages, bringing home not only ISC's first ever Nationals gold, but five of them. That's right - she went five for five in her individual events: 200 Breast, 500 Free, 200 IM, 200 Free, and 100 Free. In the process, she also set five new ECC meet records (as well as club records). At the end of the meet, she was awarded the "Most Valuable Swimmer" for her clean sweep. A huge congratulations to her superhuman effort this past weekend!
The rest of the team swam incredibly as well; as everyone either qualified for finals, set club records, or swam season's bests. Allison Schroeder qualified for finals in all four of her events, placing 5th in the 200 Free,10th in the 200 IM, 12th in the 100 Free, and 17th in the 100IM, all with season's bests. Matt Costigan and Brenton Tse placed 5th and 13th respectively in the 50 Breast. Costigan also finished 8th in both the 100 Breast and 50 Fly, setting new club records in all three events. Jessica Lauzon placed 7th in the 200 Fly and 15th in the 1000 Free. Christine Rovani and Katie Frawley were 15th and 16th in the 100 Breast, while Rovani also took 14th in the 50 Breast. Shannon Doh placed 13th in the 50 Back. Ben D’hooge set the new 200 Breast club record. Jonathan Leu, Nick Harlan, Nate Block, Brian Somers, Jake Hamill, and Derek Scott all swam season bests in their events.
All of the Women's relays placed in the Top 10, with four of them setting new club records and three of them winning medals. The 800 Free Relay (Lauzon, Frawley, Schroeder, & Andruzzi) shattered the club record by thirty-two seconds and captured silver. Doh, Rovani, Schroeder, & Andruzzi all comprised of the four other relays. The 400 Free Relay and 200 Free Relay set new club records while winning the bronze, and the 200 Medley and 400 Medley placed 6th and 8th respectively. Meanwhile, the Men's 400 Medley Relay (Hamill, Costigan, Somers, & Scott) and 200 Medley Relay (Hamill, Costigan, Leu, & Tse) both finished 16th. The 200 Free Relay (Costigan, Hamill, Harlan, & Tse) finished 17th.
